RECIPE: Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet potatoes have yin building properties to help you rebuild your essence and reconnect with your roots. They are also high in Vitamin A for enhanced vision. This pie can also be prepared with yams.

Yields: 1 medium sized pie Cooking time: 30-40 minutes

1 1/2 cup sweet potatoes, cooked, peeled and pureed (approximately 4) 1/2 cup agave nectar
3 tablespoons molasses
1/2 cup almond, hemp, rice or goat milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Combine sweet potato puree with agave nectar, molasses and milk alternative. Fold in vanilla and spices. Pour into muffin tins or a wheat or gluten free pie shell and bake at 375 degrees for 30-40 minutes.

Pumpkin Seed Pesto Recipe

Recipe from Cooking for Fertility by Kathryn Flynn:

Pumpkin seeds are a good source of omega fatty acids and zinc, both essential for conception, hormone balance, sperm production and proper immune function. Garlic and basil vitalize the energy flow to alleviate PMS, blood clotting, fibroids, and release stuck emotions.  And it’s delicious!!


1 1/2 cup pesto

2 cups fresh basil

1 cup kale

1/2 cup pumpkin seeds

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

3 garlic cloves, finely minced

Juice of 1/2 a fresh lemon

Optional: For a creamier texture, add 1/2 avocado, peeled and cored

Blend ingredients in food processor, using lemon juice to achieve desired consistency.  Delicious on gluten free pizzas and brown rice pasta!

Acid and Alkaline Forming Foods

Acidic foods can exacerbate underlying inflammatory reactions that can make cervical fluid hostile, and the entire body, including the uterus, joints, muscles, and tissues reactive. An alkaline environment is at rest, and conducive to growth, restoration and receptivity. Keep in mind that dietary intake is only one source of acidity in the body. A stressful, reactive lifestyle leads to an acidic, reactive body. A restful, restorative approach to life is more conducive to alkalinity.

How do you know if your body is acidic or alkaline?

You may test your urine with pH strips, which you can purchase at most drug stores.  Match the color of the pH paper to the chart and it will tell you if your body is acidic – below 7, or alkaline – above 7.  The idea pH for your body is a pH of 7.3  The range can be between 7.0 and 7.8

Here is a checklist of acidic and alkaline foods.

Highest in Acid Forming Foods:

Alcohol, artichoke root, barley, bread, buckwheat, caffeine, coffee, corn (when processed and not fresh), custards, drugs, most flours, ginger preserves, honey, lentils, pate, oatmeal, peanuts rice, rye grain, soy bred, soy noodles, sorghum, spaghetti, and other pastas, sugar cane, raw beets, tobacco, walnut, wheat.

Acid Forming Foods:

Dried beans, cashews, coconut, cranberry juice and concentrate, egg yolk, filberts, fruit jellies, (canned jams, sulfured, sugared, dried), grapes, pasteurized milk products, dry peas, pecans, Damson plums, tofu, fries and water-chestnuts.

Acid Forming Fats:

Butter, cream, margarine and lard.

Neutral Oils – Cold pressed or expeller pressed only:

Almond, avocado, coconut, cottonseed, linseed (flaxseed), olive, safflower, sesame, sunflower, and walnut.

Highest Alkaline Forming Foods:

String beans, banana, dandelion greens, dates, figs, prunes, raisins and Swiss Chard

High Alkaline Forming Foods:

Almonds, asparagus, avocado, fresh beans, beets, black-berries, carrot, cranberries, chives, endive, sour grapes, kale, dried peach, persimmon, plum, pomegranate, raspberries, rooibos tea and spinach.

Alkaline Forming Foods:

Agar, alfalfa, apple, fresh apricot, globe artichokes, bamboo shoots, snap beans, sprouted beans, most berries, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cantaloupe, cauliflower, celery, cherries, chestnuts, chicory, coconut milk, collards, corn (when fresh), cucumbers, daikon, eggplant, escarole, garlic, ginger root, gooseberry, grapefruit, guava, horseradish (fresh and raw), kelp, kohlrabi, leek, lemon, lettuce, line, loganberry, mango, melons, raw, milk, m illet, acidophilus yogurt and whey.

How we eat may be more important than What we eat! There is a culinary chicken-and-the-egg situation at play. The foods (What) we eat affect our body and How we eat, feel/think also creates an environment of bio-chemicals, hormones and endorphins inside our body which in turn affects how our foods process. Start your day off with ease and grace. Eggs are a great source of choline, which is essential for brain-health and of course an age-old symbol of fertility!

Serves 2

Cooking time: 15-20 minutes

1 tsp extra virgin olive oil

4 organic, free-range eggs

2 tablespoons sliced black olives

1 tablespoon julienne sliced sun-dried tomatoes

1 celery stalk/rib thinly sliced

2 basil leaves sliced into thin strips

4 sliced crimini mushrooms

1/3 cup grated cheese (optional)

a dash of cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper

Beat the eggs in a bowl while slightly browning the mushrooms in a pan with olive oil. Add the other ingredients to your eggs and beat again. Pour the egg mixture into the pan and let cook for a while until the bottom starts to feel solid (gently jiggle the pan). If you chose to add the grated cheese, do that now and then instead of flipping (and tearing) the frittata, put the pan underneath your broiler and keep watch until the top is golden brown. Serve on a slice of toasted sprouted or rye bread with your favorite. Eat without distractions and with a smile.

Why is the Spleen Qi Diet So Important?

Why is the Spleen Qi diet so important to achieve optimal fertility? The energetics of the Spleen supply the entire body with its foundational energy. The Spleen processes the food and sends the derived energy to other organ systems. If inappropriate eating habits and inappropriate food overwhelm the Spleen, it cannot effectively transform the food creating dampness instead of Qi. (One of the manifestations of dampness is excess weight.) This deprives other organ systems, such as the Kidneys and the reproductive system of the energy it normally receives from the Spleen. Not only that, but dampness produced by improper eating habits can obstruct the flow of energy in the body manifesting in blocked fallopian tubes, cystic ovaries, and other reproductive abnormalities. And most importantly, when the Spleen is unable to nourish the Kidneys, the Kidneys are forced to pull their energy from the Kidney essence. The store of essence in the Kidneys is responsible for the production and quality of eggs and sperm. If the Kidneys need to pull their energy from the their essence, that essence can not support reproduction.

The foundation of the Spleen Qi diet, based off of thousands of years of Chinese wisdom is no sugar, dairy, or wheat. These foods take a lot of energy for the Spleen to transform without producing significant nourishment in return. Look for the basic replacements of goat cheese and/or milk, gluten free grains, and agave nectar or other low glycemic sugars. But remember that even these healthier alternatives need to be done in moderation to keep the Spleen functioning optimally.

Spleen Qi Diet

We harp on the positive effects of the spleen qi diet maybe ad nauseum, but its impacts are real. The way you eat does affect your fertility, your health, your outlook and your life.

It may require some lifestyle and pantry changes, but the way it changes your life is absolutely potent. Most who need it, lose a significant amount of weight. Their energy levels improve. They need less sleep, and are less stressed. And, according to a new study (albeit in rodents), better egg quality in older women.

Aging and fertility: Restricting calories in women nearing the end of their reproductive years may prolong fertility and reduce chromosomal defects in offspring, research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests.

U.S. researchers followed two groups of female mice from three months to one year of age, when their fertility normally declines. One group was kept on a 40% calorie-restricted diet for 7 months and then allowed to feed freely. Control mice had no feeding restrictions.

The number of healthy unfertilized oocytes, or eggs, was significantly lower in control mice than calorie-restricted mice, the study found. Spindle abnormalities, which can lead to chromosomal errors, also increased in control oocytes from less than 10% at three months to almost 65% at 12 months. No abnormalities were detected in oocytes from calorie-restricted mice. The study also identified a gene that regulates oocyte quality.

Caveat: The effects of calorie restriction on human reproduction haven’t been tested.

The diet:

Cut out all refined sugars and sugar substitutes

Cut out wheat and all refined carbohydrates (eliminate gluten if gluten sensitive)

Cut out milk and cow’s dairy

Cut out all hormonally treated animal products

And, if you can…

Cut out caffeine (even decaffeinated coffee, although herbal tea is fine)

Cut out alcohol

This does not have to be life-long dietary change, although most people simply will not go back to the sluggish way of eating and feeling after they have tried this a few months.
